Exclusively for Tauck, join diamond and gemstone expert Clare Appleyard for an educational experience and fascinating look inside South Africa’s City of Gold and the rich diamond and gemstone heritage of Southern and Eastern Africa. Clare, a longstanding Tauck partner in South Africa, will speak about the origin of diamonds, a culture built on the discovery of gold, and how these precious gemstones are shared around the world.
Clare graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2000 with a Master of Science degree in Geology and Geochemistry. She started her career with global diamond giant De Beers, working in the Diamond Research division at their Johannesburg Geoscience Centre, with the aim of discovering new diamond deposits. As an author on multiple scientific research papers, Clare built up a significant knowledge of the origin and science of diamonds.
Clare’s time at De Beers was followed by a brief period at Anglo American, working in platinum research, before moving back to diamonds, this time in the cut and polished loose diamond sector. For the past 14 years, Clare has worked in the diamond industry as a diamond and gemstone trader and private jeweler, with a strong focus on retail and consumer education. In 2010, Clare joined Tauck as a lecture partner on South Africa: An Elegant Adventure, providing guests with an understanding and appreciation of South Africa’s rich diamond and gold heritage. Clare is Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Applied Jewellery Professional and is passionate about sharing the wonder of Africa’s gemstone heritage with the world.
