Discovering the soul of Morocco: A guest’s perspective

Morocco is a destination that stirs the imagination – conjuring images of vast deserts, ornate Kasbahs, bustling souks, and perhaps even a certain smoky piano bar from the movies. But for those who venture there, Morocco offers so much more.

Ben Dickmann traveled on Magic of Morocco in November 2024 with his wife Karen and her parents Dave and Linda. After his journey, Ben reached out to share his photos and reflections, offering a heartfelt and insightful perspective on this fascinating destination.

In this Q&A, Ben delves into the unique experiences Morocco offers, dispels some common misconceptions, and reveals what makes this lesser-known destination so unforgettable.

What surprised you most about Morocco?

Ben: Before visiting Morocco, I thought I had a good idea of what to expect – deserts, camels, colorful markets, and spicy food. And yes, those things are part of the experience, but they don’t even begin to scratch the surface.

Morocco is so much more. It’s wild seaports with fishermen casting their nets and selling their catch in vibrant markets. It’s endless stretches of farmland with olive groves as far as the eye can see. It’s bustling cities with world-class museums and art galleries. It’s ancient Medinas with a labyrinth of alleyways and souks selling everything imaginable.

What really stood out to me, though, was the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. From the moment we arrived, I felt genuinely welcomed. There’s a deep-rooted sense of generosity and kindness here that’s unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere.

Did you have any misconceptions about Morocco before your trip?

Ben: Definitely, and I think a lot of people might share these same misconceptions.

  • Some people think Morocco isn’t safe, but I couldn’t disagree more. I felt safer walking the streets of Morocco – day or night – than I did in some European cities. Of course, you should always be aware of your surroundings, as you would anywhere, but Morocco felt very safe. And with Tauck Directors and local guides by your side, you’re always well taken care of.
  • Morocco is a devoutly Islamic country, but it’s also open and welcoming to people of all faiths and backgrounds. In fact, Morocco has a long history of religious tolerance. Jews and Muslims lived peacefully together for centuries here, and many cities still have Mellahs, or Jewish quarters. You’ll also find Christian churches throughout the country. Experiencing the call to prayer is something I’ll never forget. It begins with one voice from a mosque and soon others join, creating this beautiful, echoing chorus. It’s not just a sound – it’s a moment when the world seems to slow down, and everyone is mindful of something greater than themselves.
  • I assumed all Moroccan food would be intensely spicy. It can be, but it doesn’t have to be. From fresh bread at every meal to couscous, lamb, beef, and seafood – the food is amazing and has flavors you’ve never experienced. It’s part of the culture of hospitality. The Moroccan people want to be a perfect host, and that means food, tea, and almond cookies… all the time. If you leave Morocco hungry, you did something wrong.
  • Some people worry that it’ll be difficult to communicate. Most everyone in Morocco speaks their local dialect of Arabic and French, but many also know enough English to easily communicate. They’re also incredibly patient and appreciate even small attempts to say “please” or “thank you” in Arabic. Again, the local guides are always there to help, and a smile goes a long way.
What makes Morocco a must-visit destination?

Ben: The trip is a true immersion. It’s not just a look-and-point tour. Morocco has natural beauty, stunning landscapes, warm people, great food, nice weather, and eons of history. It’s a bombardment of the senses… sights, smells, tastes, and sounds. It has vibrant color and peaceful shadows, spicy condiments and sublime sweets, chaotic markets and truly tranquil garden retreats. It’s unlike anything you can experience in America, and that’s why you should go, because when we open our minds and share experiences with other cultures, the world gets a little smaller and a lot more peaceful.
