I would like to take you back to February 2020, when more than 400 people gathered for our annual Tauck Director seminar. The image shared above was the opening slide of my annual State of the Business address – it speaks to algorithms. An algorithm is a process or set of rules followed by calculations, done with amazing speed. Algorithms are becoming more and more involved in our daily lives. We may not even realize it. Algorithms have been impactful in the travel industry for decades as online travel and hospitality companies seek to target prospects and influence purchase decisions. And more recently, anticipation grows around new developments by ChatGPT and other AI technology. So, I shared this question, “How do you compete?” And the answer is so clear and is right in front of us. And fortunately, it fits Tauck’s DNA to a tee.
The answer is through the hearts and minds of our people. We are humans who care. We anticipate needs. We problem solve. We bring people closer together. We build relationships and an ecosystem of caring people who deliver the experiences you enjoy. Tauck has and will continue to leverage technology, but essential to our ability to thrive as we reach 100 years young in two years, is through our people and our relationships across our industry and around the globe.
I was reminded of this when I concluded a recent voyage along the Douro River in Portugal on March 30th aboard our newest riverboat, the exquisite ms Andorinha. Ironically, it was three years to the day when the ms Andorinha was originally scheduled to be christened. I left Portugal reflecting on how much had occurred during this time – yet also how much things felt the same. This made me smile for which I am grateful. Let me explain.
My wife Kiki and I, along with many members of our Tauck team, were hosting dozens of the largest travel advisors in the nation on this cruise. We all grew so close during this short time together. The spirit onboard was friendly and personal and everyone contributed to the experience, sharing their own lifetime experiences making for a richer, fuller experience for all. As impactful were the local citizens of Portugal we met along the way. The guide in Regua was so proud of his “home” and so knowledgeable and eager to share. A third-generation winemaker – still committed with his 90-year-old father, to the centuries old practice of stomping grapes with feet – yet was also modern in his aims and relevant; and proud to share that he received a rating of 95 from Robert Parker for a cabernet. There was an a cappella group of high school students from a local Jesuit school. Their smiles, their kinship and the hope one could feel for their future as you looked into their eyes and smiles, was energizing.
Our industry makes considerable investments in the “hardware” of the experience – and for this we are so grateful. But what has always been true, and always will be, is that people really bring the experience alive. Through stories, care and camaraderie, our thirst for more deepens because of the people we meet along the way. At its core, human connections are the most memorable elements of travel.
Our Tauck Directors at Full Staff
Central to our ecosystem, and often ranked the “#1 most important element contributing to your satisfaction” are our Tauck Directors (TDs). Hailing from literally all corners of the world – and from a myriad of backgrounds – all are energetically committed to serving you and enlivening your experience. There have been staffing shortages across the hospitality industry including tour directors and local guides for many companies. But not at Tauck. We were able to retain a large percentage of our team and we had many more applications for open positions than available spots. In February we held our annual TD seminar and 300 Tauckies gathered – from 41 countries and 52 languages spoken. It’s difficult to convey the energy when this many Tauck Directors gather. We wish we could “bottle” this energy and provide it to the world. We had many TDs celebrating 40 years in service and also hosted 65 new TDs. They left Morocco and traveled to literally all parts of the earth to serve our patrons with energy and knowing we stand behind them, always.
Looking Forward
In 2022 we operated with breadth and depth around the world – including 61 countries and all 7 continents. In 2023 we will expand further, and operate in Japan, South Korea, Qatar and United Arab Emirates. Three-plus years out from the shutdown in March of 2020, we now have greater context and clarity – on that time and where we are today. I’m grateful to share in looking across our business through multiple lenses, Tauck has emerged perhaps stronger than ever. Conditions are still not perfect everywhere, by any stretch. Our industry continues to rebuild staffing, implement training and hone operating processes. I was glad to read a report by The World Travel and Tourism Council that travel industry employment is back to 95% of 2019 levels. We have renewed old supplier partnerships and created hundreds of new relationships. Our Worldwide Operations team is working “double time” across the globe to deepen connections and clarify expectations for our Tauck standards with our partners.
Through the “hearts and minds” of everyone across our ecosystem, we see long tenured Tauckies and new team members, as well as supplier partners, new and old, all share their commitment to help realize our purpose in serving you. We remain very optimistic about our future and so grateful for your continued trust.
Wishing you many wonderful new connections in your travels this year.
Warm Regards,
Daniel W. Mahar, CEO
Keep up the great work, Dan. We just returned from a Greece Tauck trip and have Iceland with you planned for July. Not sure just how many Tauck trips we have purchased, but we believe in you. Dr tom b.
Dear Mr. Mahar:
I had wanted to write to Tauck after our Japan trip from which we returned two weeks ago. Your letter was a reminder to do so. Our Japan trip was fabulous. Our tour director, Armin was great. He certainly went out of his way to make sure all the guests’ dietary needs were met including mine. In addition to being very knowledgeable, he was kind, caring, funny, and went out of his way to make sure all his guests were well taken care of. He is a gem. Additionally, we had three local guides for our tour. They were all good, but Reiko Kanari was exceptional. She too was caring, knowledgeable, and came with visuals! She was a very good addition to our tour.
Japan was our third Tauck tour. We were on one of your first Bridges tours when our daughter was either 13 or 14, that was 21 years ago. Our tour before the Japan tour, was just before Covid. It was the wonderful tour of Australia. Our next tour will be our first Tauck River Cruise. It will be in April 2024 from Amsterdam to Brussels. Looking forward to taking a few more of your small tour trips.
Enjoy the summer.
Warm wishes,
Judy S.
So happy to hear that our favorite and only tour company is doing well and expanding despite the uncertain business economy
Wonderful article. After 39 years owning a travel agency, Tauck is one of the companies I know when I send clients they always come back happy, great stories and ready for their next Tauck Adventure. I’m always ready for mine as well, which this year is Iceland in July.
Thank you for your comments and insight. You are in tune with the industry, your travel suppliers and us your travel partners, for which I am most grateful. Your leadership role in this vast industry is key to yours and our success, and for that I am most grateful.
From my perspective, Tauck staff, from booking journey to cruising to leaving are the best I have ever experienced. They are well trained, but they are also dedicated and motivated.
Cathy and I have only traveled with Tauck once in 2021 to Peru/Galapagos with Ronny as our Tauck Director. Fantastic experience and excellent Director. We are about to book our next trip for April 2024 Amsterdam to Milan tour. We are definitely excited.
The trip we took with Tauck was great. We will do another in time.
I have traveled with Tauck since 1999 and every trip I took was fantastic. I have not traveled with you since my last riverboat trip in August 2019. Airline issues of all kinds have prevented this and I do hope I can travel again soon if the airlines can dig out of their ongoing issues. Thank you for all you do and I am delighted to hear Tauck is doing well.
This was an excellent update which was very informative! We are looking forward to our 9th and tenth Tauck tour…..in two weeks..Scotland and Ireland….with four more booked during the next two years….we could not be happier and your update sets the stage for our future travels with Tauck..THANK YOU..Stuart S.
Great letter and so inspiring. Thanks for the reminder that Tauck is people first….and that Travel Counselors matter.

Loved the article and very much on point as to the value Tauck brings to the travel industry. I am happy to say that I am a strong supporter of the brand to my clients and to myself personally. Everyone at Tauck does an excellent job and they never disappoint. You are exceptional, keep up the wonderful work that you do. Wishing everyone at Tauck a great year and looking forward to many years to come.
Thank you.
My husband and I have taken 3 Tauck tours in the US and loved all of our tour directors. This year we are signed up for a tour of Italy (Venice to Rome). Because of some health issues I was very leery of being in another country but I told my husband if we’re going to Italy, it MUST be with Tauck. It’s the only way I would feel comfortable. God bless all of you and we hope you all know how much you are appreciated for the work you do. See you in Italy!
We recently completed a Bellissima Northern Italy tour with TD Victor. I want you to know- I enjoyed watching Victor do his thing as I was watching a man at the top of his art. He made it look easy and fun. A real artist. Kudos to you and Victor.
Loved your letter, and especially the sentence, “At its core, human connections are the most memorable elements of travel.” As a Tauck traveler from the mid-70’s, I can certainly attest to wonderful experiences on the many trips I’ve taken with Tauck. I’ll never travel any other way!
Looking forward to traveling with you guys again. WELCOME BACK!!
We have had almost 20 travels with your company. We have tried others, but keep coming back!! We are looking forward to 4 more upcoming trips soon! There is no comparison to your escorts and itineraries!!
Well done!
Tauck has been my favorite tour operator since I started in 1989. Thank you for all you do!
I just read your blog post about Tauck’s Hearts and Minds program and I was really impressed. I love the idea of using travel to connect with people from different cultures and learn about their perspectives. I think it’s so important to understand different cultures in order to build bridges and create a more peaceful world.
I’m particularly interested in the Hearts and Minds program’s focus on education. I think it’s essential to educate people about different cultures in order to break down stereotypes and promote understanding.
Thanks for sharing your insights! I’m excited to learn more about Tauck’s Hearts and Minds program.
This was a moving piece to read. It’s going to bring the readers into the talk mentality and they’re winning formula on making travel fun for us The people they bring together to make us feel like friends already. While I have not traveled with talk but once I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m ready. I loved hearing about Portugal and that intrigues me very much. I look forward to traveling with you again and thank you.
